Vanishing cream

How to make vanishing cream at home

 Definition of vanishing creams:-

Vanishing cream anishing cream has this name because it appears to vanish when spread on the skin.

What is the vanishing cream?

Explain briefly vanishing cream is Emulsion of water and stearic acid and higher alcohols, stearic acid monoglyceride etc. To give it a moisturising effect, polyhydric alcohols (glycerine, sorbit, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol etc) are added. It employs the oil in water type emulsions only with 10% to 20% oil phase being dispersed through the water & has been one of the major type of cream for many years.

When the stearic acid in the oil and the potassium hydroxide (it could also be NaoH or TEA) in the water and mix, there is a neutralisation reaction producing potassium stearate which which act as a emulsifier. This is called " reaction Emulsification ( soap Emulsification)" and a manufacturing method which has been widely used forever with the introduction of surfactants, there are many vanishing creams made using this combination of Reaction Emulsification & surface active agents.

Now a days as the pH of creams is closed to natural, the main type of Emulsion system used is one using mainly non ionic surfactants together with the small amount of soap.

Types of Emulsion:-

Mainly oil and water type emulsions are used in the formulation of vanishing cream. it helps to provide the higher amount of water which helps moisturise the skin.

Compositions of vanishing cream:-

Active ingredients, oils, humectants, surfactants, preservatives, perfumes, antioxidants, alkalies.

Typical formula:- Vanishing cream

(Oil in water type, soap & non ionic surfactants)

Manufacturing procedure:-

  1. Add the humectants and alkali to the purified water and heat up to 70°c to make the water phase.
  2. After heating the oil component ingredients together to make a solution and the surfactants.
  3. Then add preservatives, antioxidants and perfumes and Keep heating to 70°c.
  4. Add this solution to the water phase to carry out the preliminary Emulsification.
  5. After making the emulsion particles uniform in size in a homomixer
  6. Then filter, cool and keep it in proper closed container.
