The Quality requirements for mascara are as follows:-

  2. They should go on evenly and should not the harden the eyelashes or form blobs.
  3. They should make the eyelashes look thick and long.
  4. They should have appropriate  luster.
  5. They should make the eyelashes curl effectively.
  6. They should have an appropriate drying time.
  7. When dry they should not go the lower eyelids and their appearance must not be spoiled.
  8. They should not be easy to remove.
  9. They should be easy to use throughout the period of use.

However as the degree of importance of these requirement varies with the type of eyelashes and individual preference it is difficult to make one type of product which will satisfy everyone. So there are several different types on market. The viscosity of the mascara and the brush and other aspects of the container contribute greatly to the difference between product types. Furthermore people's eyelashes vary. They have different lengths thickness, degree of fineness and grow upwards or downwards.
Preferences for mascara of which there is tremendous range are thus partly determined by such differences in eyelashes types also influencing this is whether they can be used with false eyelashes or not.
